Privacy Policy
WifiNow reads the Wi-Fi name and password off a printed sign and connects your phone to that network. It does this entirely on your device.
WifiNow has no user accounts, no servers, and no analytics. We do not collect, transmit, or store your personal information anywhere outside your own phone.
Photos and text recognition
When you point the camera at a sign and capture it, the photo is cropped to the frame you aimed and passed to a text recognition engine that runs on your phone (Google ML Kit, bundled inside the app).
The photo is never uploaded. It is written to the app's temporary storage for the moment it takes to read the text, and is not added to your photo library. There is no server for it to be sent to.
Wi-Fi networks you connect to
When you successfully join a network, WifiNow saves the network name and password on your device so you can rejoin it later without scanning the sign again. This list holds up to 50 networks, oldest dropped first.
It is stored in the app's private storage area, which the Android system keeps isolated from other apps on the phone. It is never transmitted anywhere. You can delete the whole list at any time from the History screen.
Permissions, and why each one is needed
- Camera — to photograph the sign. Used only while you have the scanner open.
-
Location (
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION,ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) — Android requires apps to hold location permission before it will return a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks or reveal which network you're on. This is an operating-system rule, not a choice we made. WifiNow does not record, use, or transmit your location. -
Nearby Wi-Fi devices (
NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES) — the newer Android 13+ permission for the same purpose: seeing the networks around you. - Wi-Fi and network state — to list available networks, join the one you chose, and check whether the connection actually worked.
- Internet — to verify that the network you joined can actually reach the internet.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-ups, or profiles.
- No analytics, tracking, crash reporting, or advertising identifiers.
- No third-party services that receive your data. The text recognition model is bundled in the app and runs offline.
- No selling or sharing of data — there is no data collected to sell or share.
Children
WifiNow is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
Deleting your data
Clearing the saved-networks list in the app removes it. Uninstalling WifiNow removes everything the app has stored on your device. Since nothing is held anywhere else, that is the complete deletion.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever starts doing something this policy doesn't describe, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the date at the top will change.
