Nine steps to read one word off a card.

Nobody thinks of this as a chore, because each step is tiny. Put them end to end and it's the same fiddly ritual in every café, hotel and airport lounge you walk into.

    Find the sign, and get close enough to read it

    Take a photo of it, because you won't remember the password

    Open Photos, find the shot, pinch to zoom in

    Copy the password out, or memorise it four characters at a time

    Leave Photos, open Settings, open Wi-Fi

    Find the right network in a list of fifteen

    Half of them look alike. Two are the venue's. One is the neighbour's.

    Get it wrong

    Was that a lowercase L or a one? A capital O or a zero? Is the first letter capital because it's the start, or because it's part of the password?

    Go back to Photos, zoom in again, retype it

    And if you're unlucky, ask the person behind the counter — who is busy.

What WifiNow does instead

The camera is already a text reader. WifiNow just connects that to the part of Android that joins networks, so nothing has to pass through your thumbs.

A real sign is mostly noise. That's true in every language.

Opening hours, a phone number, the shop's name, a thank-you — and somewhere in there, the two lines that matter. Picking those two out of the clutter is the whole job, and the clutter looks the same whatever alphabet it's in.

Why it's better

Every step it removes was a step that could go wrong.

No typing, so no typos

Mistyping is the single most common reason a Wi-Fi join fails. WifiNow never asks you to type, so the failure mode is gone rather than reduced.

It doesn't confuse l, 1 and I

The characters humans reliably misread are the ones a text recognizer handles by shape and context. O and 0, rn and m, l and 1 — the classic three.

It works with no signal at all

The reading happens on your phone. Which matters more than it sounds: you are, by definition, offline at the exact moment you need this. Nothing here waits on a server.

It reads the sign in whatever language it's in

Most signs label in English wherever you are, and WifiNow knows those labels cold — password, pass, key, code, passphrase, WPA key. When the sign uses the local word instead, it knows Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese and Russian too. And when a sign carries no label at all, it works out which line is which from context.

It ignores the rest of the sign

Only the framed area is read. The menu, the prices and the Zalo number never enter the picture, so there's less to get confused by.

It checks that it really worked

Android will report "connected" even when a different password did the joining. WifiNow only calls it a success when the password it read is provably the one that connected you.

Next time, it just knows

Networks you've joined are remembered on the phone, so the second visit needs no camera at all. You can clear the list whenever you like.

Nothing about you leaves the phone

No account, no sign-up, no analytics, no server. The photo is never uploaded — there is nowhere for it to go.

Wherever you land

The password on the wall is a global format.

The network name and password themselves are nearly always Latin characters, whatever country printed them — so the hard part was never the alphabet. It was finding the two right lines, and not fumbling them into a keyboard afterwards.

Where do I get it?

Android first. The download link lands on this page the moment it's live.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. iOS restricts how apps are allowed to join Wi-Fi networks, so it needs a different approach rather than a straight port of the Android app.

Why does it want location permission?

Because Android won't hand any app the list of nearby networks without it. That's an operating-system rule, not a choice. WifiNow never records or transmits your location — see the privacy policy.

Does it work on handwritten signs?

Often, yes — chalk and marker read fine when the light is decent. Printed text is more reliable. Either way you can correct what it read before connecting.

What if the sign has no label, just two words?

Then nothing can tell which is which, and you pick. You still skip the typing.
